Ministry Matters: We are in this together
Did you know that two of the seven mission priorities for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod are:
- Theological Education
- Love for Church Workers
Through the LWML, we offer church workers financial scholarships that can nurture and support our upcoming pastors and professional church workers so they can better equip congregations in making lifelong disciples for Christ. According to 1 Peter 4:10 ESV it says, "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." We need these individuals and are eternally grateful to those who choose to serve our LCMS members and families.
The LWML scholarships are funded through interest from the Helen Hartman Memorial Fund, gifts through JOY and MEMORIAL cards, and contributions to the Scholarship Fund. The JOY cards are used to commemorate someone's birthday, anniversary, or other special event, and the MEMORIAL cards are used to remember someone who has passed away. These cards are readily available through the LWML Scholarship Chairman.
Other ways to contribute are:
- Individual contributions
- Local LWML Organizations who dedicate funds to the scholarship fund
- Local churches and schools who dedicate funds to support future church workers
We give thanks to all those who have provided gifts to our future church workers and pray for your continued support of these individuals who chose to dedicate their life to this profession.
Our selection of scholarship recipients will be completed in April. All applicants will be notified in May and winners will be posted on the LWML website in June.
In the past 13 years the LWML Indiana District has awarded an average of nine scholarships per year. These were $500 scholarships totaling $58,000 to 53 teachers, 15 DCEs, 38 pastors, 7 deaconesses, 1 parish ministry, 1 director of parish music and 1 lay minister. The past school year we had 20 applications and could award only eight scholarships. Now this year we had money to fund all the applications that we received, but that does not always happen. This is where each individual member can help out. The scholarships are funded through interest from the Helen Hartman Memorial Fund, gifts through JOY and MEMORIAL cards, and contributions to the Scholarship Fund. The JOY cards are used to commemorate someone's birthday, anniversary, or other special event, and the MEMORIAL cards are used to remember someone who has passed away. These cards are available during the convention at the Scholarship display table.
